April 29, 2023 from 10:00am to 1:00pm

Join ISCMV, the City of New Westminster, and the New Westminster Environmental Partners for a stewardship event at Glenbrook Ravine!

During this event, we'll be getting back to restoring Glenbrook Ravine to enhance the area’s biodiversity and make this amazing park even more enjoyable for our community. Our goal for April's event is to work on a section that was planted back in years 1 and 2 of this project where a large patch of Himalayan blackberry has re-established. We'll show participants where this patch is and will demonstrate to newcomers how to ID and remove blackberry.

This is a family-friendly event, and we have ways for people of all ages and abilities to get involved and contribute. You do not need to be a resident of New Westminster to participate. Anyone welcome! We will be working rain or shine. Check out our events page for more Glenbrook dates this year (there will be 5 events in total).

Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to Project Lead Melanie Apps at melapps89@gmail.com to be added to the Glenbrook Ravine Restoration mailing list.

Please bring:

  • Your own water bottle or two filled with water
  • Your own work gloves (if you have them; we will have some spare gloves on site)
  • Your own tools if you're able (we will have ways of sanitizing tools on site and do have some tools handy for participants)
  • appropriate footwear (something with ankle support and closed toes)
  • appropriate clothes for the weather (sunscreen / long sleeve shirt / hat if it's hot and sunny, a rain jacket / waterproof jacket if it's raining)

Light snacks and refreshments will be available for all attendees!

Working on the slope
Since the area we're working on is on a slope with some steep sections, understandably this may make it tricky for folks with mobility concerns to work on our project site. If this is a concern, please let me know as we can find flatter areas where you can help with invasive plant removal - we'd like to make this event as accessible to everyone as possible.

Site Access

For detailed directions to the site and a map, please contact Project Lead Melanie Apps at melapps89@gmail.com Access to the site is best from Entrance One (the Glenbrook Amenities Centre parking lot at 76 Jamieson Court). It's roughly a 5-10 minute walk to the site from Entrances 1. Please note that from the start of May 2023 to the end of October 2023, Entrances 2 and 3 won't be accessible to the public due to Metro Vancouver's ongoing work on the combined sewer overflow gate replacement project. Since this is happening on the north half of the ravine, our restoration work thankfully won't be impacted, and the south entrance from Jamieson Court will still be accessible. While most of the work by Metro Vancouver will be happening on weekdays, please be aware that construction vehicles may occasionally be using the main trail (entrance 1) to access the north half of the ravine on weekends.

Washroom Access

Please note that there is no washroom on site and that we recommend using the washroom before attending the event. The Glenbrook Amenities Centre at 76 Jamieson Court sometimes has washroom access, although this is not guaranteed as the Amenities Centre is often closed on Saturdays.

Liability Waivers

A liability waiver will be required for everyone to sign (attached in this email and available on site day of) and will be valid throughout 2023. Anyone under the age of 18 will need permission from a parent/guardian (second page of waiver) before the event. To speed up the check-in process, you can download, print and complete this waiver ahead of time and bring it with you (first page for adults, second page for minors). Minors not accompanied by a parent/guardian will have to submit a signed waiver ahead of time or bring it with them. Waivers will also be available to sign at the event. Your waiver is good for the year.
